Stage 1: Tijuana - Ensenada - 110 km

A challenging stage, not because of the elevation profile, but because of Tijuana. Riding in the chaos of this city can be psychologically demanding and you have to pay attention all time to get out of this city safe and sound.
  • When crossing the border make sure to get your stamp. If you don't stop at the immigration office, the officers will just wave you through.
  • Getting out of Tijuana, there are basically two possibilities: the free road ("Libre") and the toll road ("Cuota").
    • B - Free Road: Bicycles are allowed, but you face a big climb just getting out of town. And shoulders are somehow no existent.
    • A - Toll Road: Bicycles are NOT allowed. However, you can sneak through one of the plenty holes in the fence or even try to pass the pay station. The worst thing that can happen is, that some police officer tells you to leave the road or that you should pay the fee.  Road conditions are great, you have a broad shoulder and a good pavement. Traffic is moderate and there are no big climbs all the way to Ensenada, once you make it out of Tijuana.
  • To get out, follow the border fence heading west and then stick to the main road until the cuota road begins. Then try to find a place to get on that road.
  • km 50: Rosarito. Plenty of possibilities to stock up supply, supermarkets etc. from here: you face again the question: toll road or libre:
    • A - Tollroad: along the Pacific. One climb at La Mision, quite long, but not very steep, followed by a nice descent with great views over the ocean. Shoulders are sometimes good, sometimes very bad and sometimes non existent. Caution: on this stretch, one part collapsed in December 2013. Make sure to check, when it's rideable again!
    • B - Libre: leaves the coastline and you'll have to climb a big hill. Be careful with the traffic: shoulders are small and traffic increases here.
  • km 110: Ensenada. Plenty of possibilities to get supply, bike shop, supermarkets.
  • From December - March  watch out for whales. They can be seen easily jumping around in the Pacific Ocean.
